Gun Debate Sparks Emotions During State House Hearings

Rhode Island Lawmakers heard two days of often times emotional testimony on dozens of Gun Bills before them.

Among the bills is one from the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee to make it a felony to own a semi automatic firearm with a high capacity magazine. Senator Cynthia Coyne told the committee that those magazines allow someone to inflict harm in just a matter of seconds.

Proponents of stricter gun laws in the state say that it is not about taking guns away from legal gun owners. But keeping them out of the hands of criminals.

Opponents of many of the gun proposals call the proposals "feel good" pieces of legislation that will do little if anything to reduce gun violence either in the state or the region.

The next step is for the Committee to further review the testimony and then vote out bills that will be debated by the full senate.

There has been no time table set for that to happen.
