Meth Not Police Cause For Man's Death

The Rhode Island Attorney General's office has cleared the Providence Police Department for the death of an individual in custody.

Five officers responded to a disturbance in a park on Collyer Street on May 7th, 2021. They encountered Joseph Ventre of Warwick, who was seen on body cameras tossing and turning on the ground.

The police attempted to place handcuffs on Ventre after rescue crews arrived for everyone's safety.

The 34-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Providence Journal reports the state Medical Examiner's office determined Ventre's passing was the result of the toxic effects of methamphetamine and methadone.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez has not commented yet.
