Coach Cooley Leaves Providence- Headed To Georgetown

It is a done deal. Providence College men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley has announced his resignation to become the new head coach at Georgetown. The announcement was made by the college President, the Reverend Kenneith Sicard and Athletic Director Steve Napolillo. A nationwide search for a successor is now underway.

Cooley’s announcement came just hours after Providence returned home after being beaten by Kentucky in the NCAA tournament.

Father Sicard says the institution remains deeply committed to the basketball program and is very thankful of the contributions that Coach Cooley made toward it.

Cooley had been the coach at PC since 2011. He is a Providence native. He takes over a Georgetown program that was coached this past season by legendary Georgetown grad and NBA star Patrick Ewing.

Cooley coached the Friars to a record of 242 and 153. He led the team to the NCAA tournament and got three wins out of it. Providence made it to the Sweet 16 in 2022.

Georgetown has not officially introduced Cooley to the D-C media. They have welcomed the coach “to the district”.

No terms of the deal have been released.
