Governor Healey Makes Change In Emergency Shelter System

Governor Maura Healey is announcing major changes to Massachusetts' emergency shelter system.

The move is in response to what she calls the Commonwealth's "unsustainable" level of homelessness.

Beginning in August, priority will be given to families who are homeless because of a no-fault eviction, a natural disaster like a flood or fire, or who have at least one member who is a veteran.

There will also be a five-day cap on how long people can stay in emergency overflow shelters.
