The Providence City Council has passed a resolution urging Governor Dan McKee to declare homelessness a public health state of emergency.
Councilor Justin Roias introduced the resolution that is being sent to both the governor and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
Earlier this week councilors opened the Council Chamber as a warming space and called on McKee to take action.
On Wednesday the governor said declaring a public health state of emergency would not solve the complex problem of homelessness.
