A new law bans the attachment of liens against Rhode Islanders' homes due to medical debts.
The measure signed into law by Governor Dan McKee in June prohibits a lien being placed on a person's primary residence because of medical debt.
In sponsoring the bill, state Senator Jake Bissaillon said it's unconscionable that someone battling illness could also be forced to fight to keep their home.
He says Rhode Island is facing a health care crisis and a housing crisis - but no one should have to endure both at once.
