Governor Dan McKee has declared a State of Emergency for Rhode Island due to blizzard conditions.
In addition, McKee has issued a travel ban, and he has activated the Rhode Island National Guard and the State Emergency Operations Center for the duration of the storm.
The governor is asking Rhode Islanders to take the storm seriously and stay home. McKee says state agencies have the resources and manpower they need to respond to the storm and keep residents safe.
On Sunday restrictions on commercial and all motor vehicle travel on all roads statewide took effect and they will be in place until further notice.
Vehicles transporting emergency supplies or emergency personnel are exempt from the restrictions.
The Executive Office of Housing has opened all emergency pop-up sites for Rhode Islanders who need shelter during the storm.
The following emergency sites operated by the Council of Churches will be open until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24.
The Providence shelters are located at the Matthewson Street Church, the Community Church of Providence and the Open Table of Christ.
A fourth emergency pop-up site at the West Warwick Civic Center will be open until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
The state says the emergency pop-up sites are open in addition to shelters across the state and no one will be turned away without a place to go.
