Rhode Island lawmakers are considering the Super Speeder Accountability Act to address dangerous drivers.
Under the measure, high risk, repeat offenders would be required to install Intelligent Speed Assistance devices, which prevent drivers from exceeding the posted speed limit in order to have their license reinstated.
State Senator Matthew LaMountain, who introduced the bill says it's a public safety issue because speeding puts every driver, pedestrian and family at risk.
“Excessive speeding is one of the most preventable causes of serious injury and death on our roads,” said Senator LaMountain. “This legislation puts in place real restrictions, not just fines that fail to change behavior, ensuring repeat offenders are held accountable and dangerous driving is stopped before it leads to tragedy,” the senator said.
The proposal has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
