Police in Washington, DC say the suspect arrested for opening fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was a guest at the Hilton hotel where the event was taking place. DC Police Department Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll says the suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives, adding they believe he was acting alone. The suspect ran through a security checkpoint and shot at a Secret Service officer before he was apprehended.
The only member of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation to comment on the shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night was Senator Jack Reed. In a statement, he said he was in the district, is glad everyone is alright. The Senator said that political violence is never an answer to anything. And he said that the individual taken into custody should “be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Carroll says that officer was shot in his bullet-proof vest and is expected to be OK. The suspect was not wounded, but was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Fox News has identified him as 31-year-old Cole Allen of California. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said he will be arraigned on Monday.
