A Cape Cod State Rep is leading the charge against so- called "cashless bails."
It was going to be an uphill battle, but State Rep Steve Xiarhos offered an amendment during yesterday's budget debate that would basically end the practice of the taxpayer covering fees for suspects.
The amendment failed on a party line vote. Xiarhos asking lawmakers ---"What kind of message does it send to taxpayers."
He says it tells them that the state is not doing enough to protect them.
Xiarhos says that every suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocense - but not on the taxpayers dime.
The Republican State Lawmaker says he will keep trying.
