No Shellfish Harvesting In Lower Providence River After Sewage Spill

No shellfish harvesting is allowed in part of the lower Providence River after around 800-thousand gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the water near Watchemoket Cove.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says the sewage came from a pipe that broke near the East Bay Bike Path in East Providence.

RIDEM has closed the Lower Providence River conditional shellfish area, Area 16E as a result of the discharged sewage and the area will remain closed until further notice.

The cause of the pipe break is under investigation.
