Governor Dan McKee supports the concept of an independent Inspector General and that person should have oversight over all branches of government - including the legislature.
The proposal to create the position was announced by Democrat Christopher Blazejewski after he became Rhode Island's new House Speaker.
Governor McKee has sent a letter to the House Finance Committee saying he believes the proposal to create the position requires amendments to ensure the inspector general has visibility into government operations - across all branches, including actions related to public finances undertaken by the General Assembly.
So far there has been no response from legislative leaders on the Governor's request.
