The ACLU of Rhode Island has announced a settlement for the Goff Middle School student who was unlawfully arrested seven years ago.
In 2019, a Pawtucket School Resource Officer handcuffed and arrested the African American-Native American honors student after watching video of a schoolyard scuffle.
In 2022, a federal judge refused to dismiss the student's Equal Protection claim, alleging systemic racial discrimination in school-based arrests.
In addition to the settlement, the city will update its tracking and analysis of school arrest and discipline information by race.
