Trent Whitfield is the new head coach of the Boston Bruins AHL affiliate in Rhode Island.
He'll lead the Providence Bruins after serving as an assistant coach with team for nine seasons.
Whitfield succeeds Ryan Mougenel who left to be an assistant coach with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks.
The 49-year-old Whitfield played with Providence in 2013.
The native of Alameda, Saskatchewan also had a substantial NHL career.
He played for Boston, St Louis, Rangers and Washington before retiring in 2013
