Candidate For Massachusetts Lt Governor Suspends Campaign

As early voting continues in Massachusetts, the Lt Governor's candidate Shawn Oliver has suspended his campaign amid his arrest on charges that he was allegedly operating under the influence during a crash in New Bedford over the weekend.

Police say several parked cars were struck.

Besides his run for Lt Governor, Oliver is also a city councilor.

In a statement, he said that this election was to important to be overshadowed by personal matters.

He also asked for the privacy of his family to be respected.

For his part Republican Governor's candidate Mike Minogue says that Oliver needs to be with his family and to ensure that "he desn't have another such incident."

Meantime, the New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell says that that the incident is concerning and that the public deserves an explanation as to what happened.

State Republican Chairwoman Amy Carnevale says that she supprts Oliver's decision to suspend his campaign.

His name will remain on the ballot since early voting in the state is already underway and the deadline to drop out has passed.
