Wang Chung hit #2 on the Billboard chart with "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" in 1986. the Bangles' "Walk Like and Egyptian," a mega-hit that was #1 for weeks kept it out of the top spot.
I remember seeing the Cars at the Providence Civic Center in 1984. The ticket header said "With Wang Chung" and we all said Who the heck is that?!" As soon as they started playing "Dance Hall Days," the crowd went crazy and figured out who they were. (video courtesy of YouTube.)
