The reviews are in for the new Beatles documentary on Disney+, “Get Back.” Some folks think it’s a little too long, each of the three episodes clocking in at between two and three hours long for a whopping total of 468 minutes… but Peter Jackson begs to differ.
Jackson is no stranger to epics, directing the lengthy “Lord of the Rings” movie. Like the hobbits’ epic journey, he says the story of The Beatles couldn’t be told in less time. “Get Back” was made by sifting through 60 hours of footage from Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s1970 film “Let It Be,” and if Jackson cut anything out, he says it could’ve taken “another 50 years” to uncover.
“I’d like to say that I didn’t really leave out anything that I thought was important,” he said, “which is why the duration has crept up to what it is today,” Jackson notes. “I was seeing and hearing these amazing moments. I thought: ‘God, people have got to see this. This is great. They have to see this.’”
