Bonnie Raitt may be a musical legend in her own right, but she admits even she was intimidated by the thought of working with Prince. During an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Bonnie says in the eighties, Prince invited her to Paisley Park to collaborate and she was so nervous she quit drinking and lost weight for it.
She shares that she got the invite because Prince thought she was being mistreated by her label, but she wound up breaking a thumb in a skiing accident, so it had to be delayed a few months.
“I was like 35-40 pounds heavier and I went, ‘You know, if I do a video with this guy — if the songs works and it’s really sexy — I gotta do something… I gotta work on this,” she explained, noting she quit booze and then started hanging out with some sober friends. She says the whole thing made her realize, “‘You know what? This feels really good.’ So I lost 20 pounds before I worked with Prince.”
Bonnie noted she was totally terrified of “[him] looking and saying all that sexy stuff to me and going, ‘I don’t think people are gonna believe that.'”
