Elton John announced his retirement from touring back in January 2018, but before he said goodbye, he embarked on a worldwide farewell tour, the “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour”. This tour has been a huge success, grossing over $817.9 million and becoming the highest grossing tour in history according to Billboard Boxscore.
Elton John spent the first few years of the tour performing in arenas and later advanced to stadiums which greatly increased his revenue. The tour's most recent leg in Oceania grossed $40.9 million and sold 242,000 tickets, which pushed the total revenue of the tour over $800 million.
So far, Elton John has sold over 5.3 million tickets for this tour and is set to surpass Coldplay and Guns N' Roses in terms of ticket sales. In his entire career, dating back to his 1986 Ice on Fire Tour, Elton John has grossed over $1.863 billion and sold 19.9 million tickets, making him the highest grossing and highest attended solo artist in Boxscore history.
