On June 6th, 1944, the U.S. and its allies launched the largest single military initiative in history, with the "D-Day" landings at and around Normandy, France. The pivotal battles begun on D-Day turned the tide of the World War II and accomplished its mission of pushing German forces back from their French foothold. The allied forces included over 150,000 soldiers and almost 200,000 naval personnel. Over 4,000 allied heroes were killed.
