Live Action "Barbie" Film Starring Margot Robbie Gets a Director

Over the years there have been several animated and CGI Barbie movies, but this will be the first live action film, and an Oscar nominated actress will play the fashion doll. According to "Variety," Margot Robbie will star as Barbie in a new movie, and the project has found a new director!

This idea has been in the works for a while. You may remember Amy Schumer was signed on in 2016 to play Barbie in a film by Sony Pictures Entertainment with Diablo Cody set to direct. Amy had to back out due to scheduling conflicts, so Anne Hathaway became her replacement in 2017. Then in 2018 Cody dropped out of the project saying, “Dude, I never even produced an initial draft. I failed so hard at that project. I was literally incapable of writing a Barbie script. God knows I tried.”

After so many problems getting the project off the ground, in 2019 Mattel decided to switch studios from Sony to Warner Bros. They chose Margot Robbie as their new Barbie, and announced that her "Lucky Chap" production company would produce the film. "Variety" also reports that director Greta Gerwig has also signed on to direct the film. In 2018, Gerwig was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director for her film Lady Bird, and she also was at the helm of the most recent adaptation of "Little Women" in 2019. So far no details about the Barbie movie's story line have been released, but filming is set to start in 2022.
