The anniversary of one of America's darkest days, September 11, 2001 is tough enough, but it's even more difficult to process on the 20th anniversary. I really miss that 9/12 feeling. The day after the attacks there were American flags flying everywhere and we were united as a nation despite all of our differences. As a deeply divided nation I wish we could have that 9/12 "day after" feeling of unity again.
In an attempt to turn a negative into a positive, now September 11th is known as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, also known as 9/11 Day.
The nonprofit MyGoodDeed came up with the idea in 2002, and many charities and service organizations backed it up. They've created a tradition of using the day to do acts of kindness and service to others as a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and their families, along with all of those first responders who helped victims on that fateful day.
