A Beloved Star of 'Sesame Street' Has Passed Away at Age 81

Those of us who grew up watching Sesame Street fondly remember Luis Rodriguez, the owner of the Fix-It-Shop. Luis was played by Emilio Delgado for 45 years! Sadly, he has passed away at the age of 81. His wife, Carole Delgado said in December 2020, Emilio was diagnosed with Multiple myeloma, a cancer that develops in your blood’s plasma cells. Carole said Emilio’s family was there with him when he died at his home in New York City.

A spokesperson for Sesame Street told People, “Emilio proudly laid claim to the 'record for the longest-running role for a Mexican-American in a TV series.' We are so grateful he shared his talents with us and with the world."

The couple were longtime activists in their community, advocating for Chicano rights, and racial and social justice. The Delgados were also members of the board of directors at The Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice in New York City which provided a safe space for members of the LGBTQIA community.
