There were some surprise appearances from a couple of major stars at the Newport Folk Festival over the weekend.
During Saturday’s show Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats led a tribute to the music of Paul Simon when the legend himself showed up on stage for a rare public performance. He retired from touring back in 2018 so this was quite a treat.
And on Sunday, fans were surprised and excited to see Joni Mitchell take the stage along with Brandi Carlile, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford and others. The group performed Mitchell’s classic songs "The Circle Game" and "Big Yellow Taxi" and Joni even did an electric guitar solo!
She hasn’t done a full performance since 2000, in fact public appearances from her are pretty rare since 2015 when she suffered a brain aneurysm.
