Top Costume Trends for Halloween 2022

October will be here in just a few days, so it’s time to start thinking about Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday and I’ve already been thinking about costumes and decorations for months. Apparently, I’m not the only one. According to a new poll done by Hershey’s, 60% of people feel it’s okay to start celebrating Halloween before October. And 70% of parents with kids think that’s true.

This year my Halloween party will have a ‘Stranger Things’ theme, and this poll found that that is one of the top trends for 2022. Costumes of Eleven, Hopper, Steve and other characters from the popular Netflix series are selling well this year. And other TV shows and movies are influencing people’s costume choices including “Ted Lasso” and “Yellowstone.” Old favorites “Beetlejuice,” “The Addams Family,” "Wizard of Oz" and “Sonic” are also trending.

For the kids, Buzz Lightyear is popular again and you may see characters from the movie Encanto, also the TV show Bluey and the series Dino Ranch ringing your doorbell on Halloween night.

Costume retailer Spirit Halloween talked about some other trends for the 2022 season and they include:

  • Witches, which are always popular, and even more so this year because of the long-awaited sequel to “Hocus Pocus” coming to Disney + this Friday, September 30th. Lots of folks are buying up Sanderson sisters costumes this year.
  • Clowns sadly make an appearance every Halloween, and the super scary ones like Pennywise from ‘IT’ are every popular. This year the classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space have had a resurgence in popularity.
  • Classic Horror Characters never go out of fashion including Freddy, Jason, Ghost Face, Chucky and Trick ’r Treat Sam.
  • Animation characters from video games and anime from Minecraft, Fortnite Naruto, Demon Slayer and others are also among the top choices.
