The Do's and Don'ts of Pumpkin Carving

I love Halloween, it’s my favorite holiday! I’m pretty good at decorating and making costumes, but the one thing I stink at is carving a pumpkin. I can’t do anything more than the triangle eyes.

I’ve tried and tried but it just never comes out right, so I was really excited to see this video from this woman Babs on TikTok! Babs talks about the dos and don'ts of pumpkin carving, and she has some fantastic tips!

You know how getting all of the guts out of the pumpkin is really difficult? All the seeds and the stringy bits? For that she uses an electric hand mixer to stir up all the insides, and then they are much easier to remove. By the way, she recommends cutting the bottom of the pumpkin rather than the top so that it looks a lot neater.

Another one of her tips is to use a red, dry erase marker to sketch your design, and that comes off easily, so you don’t leave any marks behind after carving.

If you have trouble cutting out the eyes, the nose and the mouth, she recommends using cookie cutters and a rubber mallet to carve your design. Next, you’ll want to cover all cut surfaces with Vaseline which will keep the pumpkin moist after you carve it. By doing that, the Jack O’ Lantern should stay fresh for between one and two weeks, which is way longer than they usually last at my house. Normally they start turning black after a couple of days.

She also recommends sprinkling some cinnamon on the inside top of your pumpkin to give it that pumpkin spice smell when a candle is lit inside.
