Majority of Americans Think Being a Man Helps People Get Ahead

Getting ahead in this country, it'll help to be a man, according to the Pew Research Center.The poll of just over 5-thousand U.S. adults finds that six in 10 agree that being a man helps a lot or a little with a person’s ability to get ahead in the U.S.

When asked about being a woman, the responses are much different. Half of all respondents say it hurts a person’s ability to get ahead and only 24% say it helps. The poll also reveals some differences in responses between the genders.

• About two-thirds of women (67%) say being a man helps a person’s ability to get ahead at least a little, including 48% who say it helps a lot.
• Just over half (52%) of men say being a man helps, while 28% say it helps a lot.
• While 58% of women say being a woman hurts, only 40% of men agree.
• Women younger than age 30 are more likely than women 30 and older to say being a man helps a person get ahead (76% compared to 64%). But there aren’t any age differences among men’s responses.
• There are some partisan differences, though. Among Democrats and independents who lean toward the Democratic Party, 77% say being a man helps. With Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP, 43% say being a man helps, 22% say it hurts and 34% say it doesn’t help or hurt.
